Cerezino Art House Residency
A private live/work residency for visual artists in Barreiro, Portugal
One artist at a time. Space to focus and develop your work.
Residency Overview
Cerezino Art House Residency is a self-directed residency for artists, writers and creative practitioners seeking time, space and focus to develop their work in Barreiro, across the river from Lisbon.
The residency is based within my home and studio — a converted warehouse that combines living, working and exhibition spaces. Residents are offered a private studio-bedroom and become part of the quiet rhythm of the house: a place centred around art-making, reflection, conversation and independent practice.
We encourage a self-led approach, with an emphasis on experimentation, process and cultural exchange. There is no imposed theme or outcome. Residents are invited to continue an existing body of work, begin a new project, or simply use the residency as dedicated time for research, thinking and creative development.
The space itself strongly informs the experience: raw industrial architecture softened by light, lived domesticity and an active painting studio. Barreiro’s slower pace, riverfront atmosphere and proximity to Lisbon offer a unique balance between focus and access to one of Europe’s evolving contemporary art scenes.
While the residency is independent in structure, we are happy to share local knowledge, introductions and recommendations whenever relevant — from studios and galleries to exhibitions, cultural spaces and creative communities.
This residency is particularly suited to artists who value autonomy, simplicity, meaningful exchange and a more intimate, home-based creative environment.
The Space
The residency is based within a converted warehouse in the center of Barreiro, across the river from Lisbon. Once a mechanic workshop, the building has gradually been transformed into a lived-in creative environment combining artist studios, domestic spaces and areas for exhibitions, workshops and gatherings.
Residents are offered a private studio-bedroom with independ entrance via the garden. Designed for both living and working. The space is simple, spacious and filled with natural light, with high ceilings, concrete textures and an atmosphere that balances quiet focus with creative energy.
Alongside the private residency space, the rest of the building is home to me (Diana), my son Iggy and our dog Juice. The main house includes my own painting studio, home, and a flexible project/event space used occasionally for workshops, exhibitions or small cultural events. While the overall atmosphere is calm and independent, there are moments of shared activity and informal exchange that naturally emerge through the life of the house.
The residency is intentionally intimate and home-based rather than institutional. It is best suited to artists who appreciate autonomy, raw architecture, slower rhythms and the experience of living inside an active creative space.
The studio-bedroom includes essential furnishings, Wi-Fi, workspace tables, storage, a private kitchen and toilet. The bathroom is shared in the main house and can be used via an indoor entrance with easy access to the residency. The entrance to the residency studio is done via the garden. The building continues to evolve over time, maintaining its raw character while slowly being shaped through ongoing artistic and domestic use.
